Doodle & Flow: Visual Tools to Organize, Explore & Relax Your Mind
Neuroscience research shows that our overly-busy, overly-focused lives cause mental fatigue, burnout, and a general tendency to tune out the world. However, taking creative brain breaks can actually improve your overall focus and productivity!  Learn to use doodling, writing, and coloring to speed up and slow down your thinking. This class will explore intentional mind wandering with doodling and focused problem-solving with visual templates that encourage you to think through a problem from many angles.

This class isn’t about art. It’s about insight. No drawing experience necessary – just bring your and an open mind!

Visual Communication
Improve your ability to communicate with students, colleagues, clients, and collaborators by learning the fundamentals of visual communication. Draw out your ideas using mind maps, visual templates, and easy-to-draw icons during this workshop.

Visual Meetings for Non-Profit Leaders
Live, interactive visual methods invite everyone on your nonprofit team to (literally) be on the same page, while also inviting creativity and play into your meetings.  This workshop introduces you to three basic templates that you can use with your team to connect with the people that you serve, collaborate better as a team, and draw your strategic vision.

Visual Strategic Planning for Non-Profits and Entrepreneurs
Has the pandemic wreaked havoc on your strategic vision? Join the club!  Learn how to use the tools of graphic facilitation to clearly see your organization’s goals, look at stakeholders, and sketch a map of your vision!
  • Week one looks at your mission / vision in order to clarify your 2022 goals.
  • Week two maps your stakeholders and determines how to connect with them based their values.
  • Week three focuses on drawing visual metaphors that describe where you are headed. 
No drawing experience is necessary for this class because visual strategy is 100% process and 0% product. It’s not about art; it’s about insight!

Visual Note-Taking
Visual note-taking will help you listen closely to lectures, presentations, and conversations by teaching you to capture big ideas and map the flow of information.  These notes are more beautiful and emotionally-engaging than written notes, so they are a better memory and communication tool.  Learn a simple process to create visual notes using doodles (or quick sketches), keywords, and connectors to organize and record complex conversations.
Visual Storytelling
The average PowerPoint slide has 75 words on it, yet an audience can only take in about 10 words per slide. Don't overwhelm your audience! Learn how to use simple visuals to support, rather than detract from, multi-media presentations.
Career Mapping: Design an Roadmap for your Professional Life
Do you know where your career is taking you?  If not, this workshop is for you!  We will start with a values clarification exercise that will help you identify what you want to give to and get out of your work.  Then we will discuss career paths that utilize your skills and honor your values.  Next, we will look at the career paths of accomplished professionals in your field so you can see that most professionals do not walk a direct path to success. Finally, you will make a plan to conduct informational interviews with people who've achieved your dreams.

Workshops for Science & Engineering

GC599: Science Storytelling (Northern Arizona University)
Learn to give more engaging multimedia scientific presentations through storytelling. Graduate students (and undergraduates with instructor permission) from science-oriented disciplines get practice using compelling narratives and simple visuals to communicate complex scientific ideas.  This class meets continuing education requirements for K-12 teachers.  Ran Spring and Fall 2020 as ENV599, 1 credit.
Visual Thinking & Communication for Scientists
Visual tools, such as doodles, graphs, diagrams, and visual templates, help scientists think through the research design process, interpret and understand their results, and communicate their findings. This interactive workshop provides an overview of visual thinking and communication tools for research scientists and science students.
